Portfolio Review Day:
Saturday, January 23rd, 2021

The ICA San José is dedicated to providing career development opportunities for artists in the Bay Area and beyond. This year, the ICA’s most popular professional development program, the Artist Portfolio Reviews, will be held cost free and virtually via zoom on Saturday, January 23rd, 2021. In this annual artist professional development program, leading curators, art professionals, and educators provide expert advice and insights in a portfolio critique.

Meet Our Reviewers:
Beryl Bevilacque; Director at Jessica Silverman, San Francisco

In addition to working very closely with contemporary artists like: Conrad Egyir, Matthew Angelo Harrison, and Davina Semo, Bevilacque has also taught photography courses at California College of the Arts.

Dariya Bryant; Director of K Contemporary, Denver, Colorado
Dariya studied Linguistics and Intercultural Communications at the International Slavic Institute in Moscow, Russia and holds a double Bachelor of Art Degree in Studio Art and Languages from the University of Alaska, Anchorage. Her career in the arts started at the Denver Art Museum, where she worked on a variety of curatorial projects with the exhibitions and collections services. Prior to her work at K Contemporary, she managed Walker Fine Art, a contemporary art gallery, and freelanced a variety of creative projects including TARRA: Women Who Create, and RiNo Art District, as well as assisting independent artists with their exhibitions. In the gallery world, Dariya has been working closely with her interior design, architecture, and art advisory colleagues to feature artwork in prominent private and public art collections, including Crystal Bridges Museum, Denver Art Museum, TIA Collection, Vail Health, UC Health, HTI Catalyst, InterContinental Hotel, Fidelity Investments, First Western Trust, LikeMind and Delta Airlines.

Seth Curcio; Senior Director of Shulamit Nazarian, Los Angeles
Before joining Shulamit Nazarian, Curcio was the Associate Director at Pier 24 Photography in San Francisco from 2010-2016 and the Executive Director and Curator of Redux Contemporary Art Center in Charleston, South Carolina from 2005-2009. In 2006, he founded the online contemporary arts publication Daily Serving and held the position of Editor-in-Chief until it was acquired in 2013.

Elena Gross (she/they); Curatorial Manager of Exhibitions and Emerging Artists Program at Museum of the African Diaspora
Gross received an MA in Visual & Critical Studies from the California College of the Arts in 2016, and her BA in Art History and Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies from St. Mary’s College of Maryland in 2012. She specializes in representations of identity in fine art, photography, and popular media. Elena was formerly the creator and co-host of the arts & visual culture podcast What Are You Looking At? published by Art Practical. Her research has been centered around conceptual and material abstractions of the body in the work of Black modern and contemporary artists. She has presented her writing and research at institutions and conferences across the U.S., including Nook Gallery, Southern Exposure, KADIST, Harvard College, YBCA, California College of the Arts, and the GLBT History Museum. In 2018, she collaborated with the artist Leila Weefur on the publication Between Beauty & Horror (Sming Sming Books). The two performed a live adaptation of their work at The Lab, San Francisco. Her most recent writing can be found in the forthcoming publication This Is Not A Gun (Sming Sming Books/Candor Arts).

Misa Jeffereis; Assistant Curator, Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis
Jeffereis recently organized the Great Rivers Biennial 2020, featuring Kahlil Robert Irving, Tim Portlock, and Rachel Youn at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis. At CAM, Misa curates the Street Views Video Projection series and has organized exhibitions by Jonathas de Andrade, Oliver Laric, Jennifer West, and Marina Zurkow. Prior to CAM, Misa was Curatorial Associate at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, where she curated exhibitions by Lee Kit and the Guerrilla Girls. Misa holds a Masters in Art History from Hunter College in New York.

Christine Koppes; Curator and Director of Public Programs at the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) San José
Koppes is dedicated to curating exhibitions that promote awareness and appreciation of contemporary art and culture with an emphasis on emerging and mid-career artists. Koppes also manages public programs at the ICA, which includes the lecture series Talking Art and First Friday events that focus on performances and hands-on activities. In 2019 she introduced Art Hangs, a series of pop-up art events throughout downtown San Jose. Koppes has lived and worked in the Bay Area for more than ten years. From 2013 to 2018 she was Assistant Curator of Exhibition and Programs at the Bedford Gallery in Walnut Creek, CA. She received her BA in Art History from the University of California, Berkeley.

Nancy Lim; Assistant Curator, SFMOMA
Lim’s recent projects include Patty Chang, Que Sera Sera and the 2019 SECA Art Award Exhibition with Sahar Khoury, Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle, and Marlon Mullen. Upcoming projects include a book on Deborah Remington and an exhibition with Harry Dodge and Alicia McCarthy at the San Francisco Arts Commission Galleries. Prior to SFMOMA, she served as Asian Art Curatorial Fellow at the Guggenheim Museum, and as Curatorial Assistant in the Department of Painting and Sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Ceci Moss; Independent Curator, Founding Director of Gas Gallery
Moss is the founder of Gas, a mobile, autonomous, experimental and networked platform for contemporary art. Her academic research addresses contemporary internet-based art practice and network culture. Her first book Expanded Internet Art: Twenty-First Century Artistic Practice and the Informational Milieu is released through the Bloomsbury series International Texts in Critical Media Aesthetics. Her writing has appeared in Rhizome, Art in America, ArtAsiaPacific, Artforum, The Wire, CURA, New Media & Society and various art catalogs. Previously, she was Assistant Curator of Visual Arts at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the Senior Editor of the art and technology non-profit arts organization Rhizome, and Special Projects Coordinator at the New Museum. She is currently a Lecturer in Curatorial Practice at California College of the Arts and she has held teaching positions at University of Southern California, Scripps College, the San Francisco Art Institute and New York University.

Evan Pricco: Editor-in-Chief, Juxtapoz Magazine
A native of Oakland, CA and the East Bay, Pricco draws artistic inspiration from Grand Royal Magazine and The Beastie Boys. An artist, curator and bootleg music digger, Pricco’s multifaceted life experience includes co-curating an exhibition with Takashi Murakami in Vancouver, and expanding the Juxtapoz universe into a podcast (Radio Juxtapoz).

Jennifer Rizzo; Director of Hashimoto Contemporary NYC & Spoke Art
Rizzo has been writing for Beautiful Bizarre since 2018, interviewed various artists for Juxtapoz and produced the 2020 publication, POW! WOW! Worldwide: 10 Years of International Street Art – Volume One for Paragon Books. Since 2011, Jennifer has been working in galleries in NYC with a passion for new contemporary art.

Ashley Wynn; Director, Monique Meloche Gallery, Chicago
Formally the director of contemporary spaces in both Los Angeles and San Francisco, Wynn also previously worked in the director’s office at MoMA, MoMA PS1, and MOCA. She has collaborated with established and emerging artists on projects, publications, and exhibitions that operate across the disciplines of art and performance. She aims to create diverse, culturally relevant and captivating programming.
