When you intern at the ICA San José, you will have the opportunity to meet artists, engage with a diverse arts community, and learn the ins and outs of a non-profit; all while building your resume in the heart of Downtown San José’s SoFA Arts District. We cater your internship to your interests and skill sets. Our flexible program offers mentorship in a wide range of gallery operations, including marketing, gallery installation, finance and curatorial administration. Along with your internship, you can expect professional development mentorship and advice that will follow you throughout your professional journey, such as learning resume building skills and receiving cover-letter writing feedback.

The Institute of Contemporary Art San José is accepting resumes for a Curatorial Internship position.
This internship is an administrative position assisting the curatorial team. Working closely with the ICA Curators, the position offers a great opportunity for individuals interested in pursuing a career as an art curator. You will work in an exciting industry while learning curatorial operations of a non-profit art organization. This is a six-month, unpaid internship position. Academic credit may apply for students, if approved by applicable school.
- Primarily curatorial administrative duties (general office, filing, database maintenance, general correspondence/emails etc.)
- Assist in the preparation of exhibition loan agreements
- Maintain artist records (biographies/curriculum vitae, press/reviews, etc.)
- Assist Curator with exhibition preparations including documents and forms
- Research artists and potential collaborators for First Friday events
- Prepare digital images using Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator(basic knowledge helpful but will train)
- Assist Curator with on and off-site programming such as ICA art events, talks, panel discussions, etc.
- Assist with the preparation of special events and programs such as the ICA Auction and portfolio reviews
- Conduct tours of exhibitions
- Greet and welcome guests to ICA at front desk
- Other duties as assigned by the ICA Curators
The candidate must have an interest in contemporary art – work experience in and/or knowledge of the field is desired. Curatorial experience or curatorial studies is strongly preferred. Art history education is a plus. Must be professional, dependable, flexible, and conscientious. Verbal, written, and organizational skills required including basic skills using Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop and InDesign.
Terms: Two days per week (minimum) for six months. (Flexible start/end date)

Arts Administration and Marketing Internship
The Arts Administration/ Marketing Internship will consist of assisting with ongoing exhibitions, administration and public programs. Projects may include: archiving and documenting exhibitions and public programs, creating artist files, marketing, public relations and development research, posting on social media platforms, as well as assisting with day-to-day administrative tasks.
The ideal skills for this position include attention to detail, willingness to complete a wide variety of office and marketing tasks, enthusiasm and interest in contemporary art, and the ability to follow through with long-term projects. Must be able to work with the public, have a great attitude, and office administration skills a plus. Desired time commitment is 10-14 hours a week, two days per week. While this is an unpaid internship, college credit can be applied.
The Arts Administration and Marketing Intern can expect to work on/ learn:
- Assisting with exhibition press releases
- Assisting Marketing team with posting to social media platforms
- Direct Community outreach
- updating e-Tapestry (Museum donor database)
- Google Ad-words and Analytics
- Calendar listings and marketing listings
- Marketing research
- Basic website editing
- Lite use of Photoshop and inDesign (experience desired)
- MailChimp email subscription
- Google+ and Pinterest for non-profits
- Archiving and filing exhibition records
- Basic office duties and procedures
- Event planning and organization
- Serve as exhibition docent (Curatorial staff will provide training)

The photography intern will work with the Marketing Associate and Gallery Administrator. The photography intern will be the primary photographer at First Fridays events, Talking Art programs, Art After Dark evenings, exhibitions Opening Receptions, and more in order to gain experience in performance and exhibition photography. This internship, although it requires minimal time commitment, requires the intern to be available for events on nights and/or weekends. While this is an unpaid position, college credit can be applied and is encouraged. This position is ideal for college seniors pursuing a BFA in photography or first year graduate students pursuing a MFA in photography. An interest in photography and art is required.
You can expect to work on/learn:
- Primary photographer for events (Openings, Talking Art, First Fridays, Auction Events)
- Assist in video and photographic needs
- Taking/editing photos that might be used for online content
- Familiarity with photo editing programs, I.e. Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator
- Gain experience in a live performance setting
- Gain experience in exhibition photography
- Help to maintain photos on server (organizing files, archiving)
- Opportunity to shadow a internationally recognized Bay Area photographer for one day
- Opportunity to participate in our Annual Artist Portfolio Reviews
