Timothy Horn: Medusa

August 2 – September 20, 2008

Medusa is an ornate and large-scale chandelier by Australian artist Timothy Horn.

The San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) is proud to present Medusa, an ornate and large-scale chandelier by Australian artist Timothy Horn. On view from August 15 through September 27, 2008, the ICA will host an opening reception on Friday, September 5, from 6 – 8pm.

Made of silicone rubber and fiber optics, Medusa is largely inspired by the jellyfish illustrations of 19th century zoologist Ernst Haeckel. Both monstrous and beautiful, Medusa’s organic and glowing form continues Horn’s interest in the history of ornamentation.

Recently shown at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburg, this will be the West Coast debut of Horn’s Medusa. Concurrent with the ICA’s presentation is “Timothy Horn: Bittersweet” at the de Young Museum, San Francisco.

Born in Melbourne, Australia, Horn studied glass and sculpture at the Canberra School of Art before receiving his MFA at the Massachusetts College of Art in 2004. He has exhibited extensively nationally and internationally. His work is included in the public collections at Mills College Art Museum, Oakland; National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; and the University of South Australia Art Museum, Adelaide.
