Jennifer Brandon: Fallen

August 24 – November 2, 2007

In this window installation, titled Fallen, a grid of transparent resin bricks glows with fluid forms of birds suspended inside of them. Each of these fragile creatures is hand-made by the artist out of tissue paper and thread. When set inside the glassy resin blocks, these bird-like objects quietly float, as if frozen in the midst of a fall.

In all of her work, Jennifer Brandon examines the vulnerability and beauty of things when they become undone. With careful attention to marred surfaces, residue and worn-down appearance, Brandon looks at how objects are metaphors of the human experience. The artist writes, “I seek out that which call attention to an emotional and physical falling apart, its inherent beauty and ugliness, captivated by those moments that mirror our experience.” In Fallen, Brandon provides an opportunity to closely examine the birds and allow their vulnerability to become our own, as they are caught between movement and stillness, beauty and decay.
