ICA Live! Carmina Eliason: Café con Leche & SJ Chamber Orchestra

Friday, December 1, 8-10pm

December ICA Live! double feature with Chamber Orchestra performing at 7PM and Carmina Eliason: Cafe Con Leche at 8PM.

As part of Overture: The Art of Steve French and Steve French’s legacy, ICA Live! December will feature the San Jose Chamber Orchestra. In addition to his studio practice, French was a dedicated and committed member of the San Jose arts community and loved music.

Artist Carmina Eliason presents Café Con Leche, a project inspired by Eliason’s reflections about the fluid similarities between skin color and the mixing of milk and coffee. In turn, she invites the public to consider their own relationship with skin color through the physical action of mixing milk and coffee, initiating a reflection and conversation on skin color as a social issue and construct, generated by the myriad individual experiences of participants.

Individuals are encouraged to drop in throughout the evening and participate in the activity and ongoing discussion!

This ICA Live! is Co-Curated by Theo Lau.

Carmina Eliason is an interdisciplinary artist who uses laundry kitchen tables, laundry lines, and food to make interactive spaces for dialogue and reflection on culture, identity, and social issues. Beginning with stories and experiences from her own life, she engages the public in conversational exchanges on themes such as inter-cultural identity, immigration, and skin color. Her installations and participatory events reference her family’s home in Mexico as well as her own home in California.
Theodore Lau is currently a Sophomore at Brown University, concentrating in Art History and English on the Non-Fiction Writing track. At Brown, he is a Writing Fellow, serves on the Executive Board of the Asian American Political Alliance, and was the recipient of an UTRA grant to complete Art Historical research this semester. He was previously the Curatorial Intern at the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art.
